Slow Computer Problems

Everyone has experienced this problem to some degree. You are sitting at your computer trying to complete a few simple tasks. You click on an icon. Thirty minutes later you are still sitting there. This just makes you want to pull your hair out. It is incredibly frustrating. It doesn’t seem like such routine tasks could take up so much of your valuable time. Yet there you sit, hour after hour, just waiting for a browser or some document just takes its sweet time to open. There has to be some solution to these slow computer problems. There are many different levels of solutions, depending on how severe your specific problems are. It may be as simple as a few clicks on your computer to as involved and frustrating as having to replace your whole system. It is an incredibly diverse array of issues with the same outcome for you, the end user: slow computer problems.

Understanding some of the basic causes of slow computer problems may help you diagnose your own issues as well as help you understand which solutions may be the right ones for you. The biggest and most common problem among computer users is that their computer is overloaded. Every program that is running uses valuable resources of your computer’s capabilities. And just because you don’t see a program in front of you on the screen does not mean it is not running. Making sure you are aware of all the programs that are running on your computer, even in the background, can go a long way in diagnosing what is slowing your computer down. Two other common problems related to this issue of computer overload are spyware and adware. These are often programs that are running in the background of your computer that you are not aware of. These are files that get into your system from the Internet. They are typically not malicious in intent so most antivirus programs don’t pick them up unless they are also capable of specifically searching for adware and spyware in addition to malware. Another common problem people run into are just simple hardware inadequacies. Over time, operating systems and other programs acquire more and more updates. What is required to make the computer run properly build up over time. You store things on the hard drive. All these things added on each other, while good things, contribute to a slow computer.

To fix most issues with your computer’s speed, you can just try and clean up the hard disk. Free software included on your computer or cheaply obtained software can do everything to clean it up for you. The other option you have is adding memory to increase the performance capabilities of the system. Either way or a combination of both will significantly alleviate most slow computer problems.

Computer Startup Problems

When computer startup problems begin to slow computer down it is time to perform some computer maintenance.  Startup problems can be caused from driver conflicts, registry problems, missing files, network connection problems, hard drive fragmentation, viruses, spyware, malware, and several other software problems that naturally result from running Windows and browsing the Internet.  Every time you connect to a website you can contract viruses, spyware, and malware.  You antivirus, malware, and spyware software needs to be up-to-date.

You can spend considerable time defragging the hard drive, cleaning the registry, cleaning out temp and old files, scanning and removing spyware and this should be done on a regular basis to keep your computer running at its optimum.  I run a computer lab of 35 computers in a high school where the students have admin rights and can configure and install any software that they desire.  The students need to have admin rights to complete labs that are teaching them ho to troubleshoot and maintain computers.  To keep me from spending too much time daily restoring all these computers I simple spend about 10 minutes each morning restoring all 35 computers at the same time.  This provides a fresh, up-to-date, highly optimized, and fast computer for the students to use.  There are 2 products that I have used to accomplish this restore.  One is free Open Source software called Partimage and the other is Norton Ghost.  I like the Norton Ghost product because it can be run using DOS.

Some of my students ask why they need to learn DOS.  I explain to them that Windows is the problem and DOS can be a great solution to the problem.  DOS is easy and fast to boot and will run a number of troubleshooting and Windows maintenance software programs.  It is hard to use a Windows solution to correct computer startup problems when Windows will not start or runs slowly.
