When the need arises for rebooting computer, there could be
several different reasons. One reason might be to just restart the computer because of a system hang or freeze. Hanging or freezing could be a driver conflict or a registry problem. You should check the suspected hardware manufactures website for updated drivers or engineering notes that might help with the problem. You should also run a good registry cleaning utility. The registry is a very large database that gets easily corrupted and contains all operating system configurations and changes to accommodate all hardware and software. Anytime or add or remove hardware or software you run the risk of corrupting the registry.

This term is also used when the need arises to return the computer to factory default settings. This can be accomplished using either a special key press during startup or an image CD that deletes and restores the operating system. This will also remove any installed programs and delete all data and personal files. This is usually not the desired option to take since to takes so long to get all your programs reinstalled and restoring all your data and files from backups.

This term could mean to restart the computer using a Live CD to get control of the hard drive in order to copy important data or files when the operating system fails and prevents you from accessing your data. Live CDs are usually Linux distributions that can read and write files from NTFS file systems. After you restart the computer using the Live CD you locate your data or files and simply copy them to an external device, such as, a flash drive or external hard drive.
